A crankshaft is a mechanical component used in a piston engine to convert the
reciprocating motion into rotational motion. The crankshaft is a
rotating shaft containing one or more crankpins, that are driven by
the pistons via the connecting rods.
The front end of the crankshaft carries gear or sprocket, vibration
damper, and fan belt pulley. A gear or sprocket operates the
camshaft, and the vibration damper provided to control torsional
vibration. The fan belt pulley drives the engine fan, water pump,
and generator with V-belt.
What is the function of a crankshaft?
The function of the crankshaft is to translate the linear
reciprocating motion of a pistons into the rotational motion
required by the automobile. This is accomplished by connecting the
pistons to the crank throws, which are offset from the central axis
of the crankshaft to create a rotation about that axis.
